About Us
The Srebrenica Committee Luxembourg is an independent, non-profit civic initiative dedicated to preserving the memory of the Srebrenica genocide of July 1995, safeguarding historical truth established by international courts, and promoting the universal values of human dignity, peace, justice and human rights.
Guided by the principles of remembrance, education and dialogue, we work to ensure that the victims of the Srebrenica genocide are never forgotten while expressing solidarity with all victims and survivors of genocide, crimes against humanity and mass atrocities around the world.
Through commemorative ceremonies, educational programmes, cultural initiatives and international cooperation, we strengthen the culture of remembrance, promote democratic values and human rights, combat genocide denial and historical revisionism, and contribute to the prevention of future atrocities.
Our story
The Srebrenica Committee Luxembourg was established in 2009 following an initiative of members of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian community in Luxembourg who shared a common commitment to preserving the memory of the Srebrenica genocide and ensuring that future generations continue to learn from one of the darkest chapters of contemporary European history.
From its inception, the Committee was conceived as an independent platform bringing together individuals, associations and institutions committed to remembrance, education, human rights and lasting peace.
Over the years, the Committee has evolved into a respected partner of public institutions, diplomatic missions, universities, memorial institutions and civil society organisations in Luxembourg, Bosnia and Herzegovina and internationally.
Today, our work extends well beyond the annual commemoration. By connecting remembrance with education, culture, research, civic engagement and international cooperation, we contribute to strengthening democratic societies, promoting intercultural dialogue and fostering a shared European culture of remembrance.
Our Mission
Our mission is to develop and implement initiatives of public interest that preserve the culture of remembrance, promote education, protect historical truth and advance human rights, with particular attention to the contemporary history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, crimes against humanity and genocide prevention.
While our primary mission remains the preservation of the memory of the Srebrenica genocide, we also express solidarity with all victims of genocide and mass atrocities, recognising that remembrance, justice and human dignity are universal values that transcend borders and generations.
Our work is built around four interconnected pillars.
Remembrance and Commemoration
We honour the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and other crimes against humanity through dignified commemorations, memorial initiatives and public remembrance.
We stand firmly against genocide denial, historical revisionism and all attempts to distort internationally established historical facts.
We express solidarity with survivors and honour the memory of victims of all genocides and mass atrocities, while preserving the unique historical significance of Srebrenica as the only genocide recognised by international courts on European soil since the Second World War.
Our commitment also includes maintaining and promoting permanent memorial initiatives, including the Srebrenica Memorial Monument in Tony Neuman Park in Luxembourg, as a lasting place of remembrance, reflection and education for present and future generations.
Education and Public Awareness
Education is one of the most powerful tools for preventing hatred, discrimination and violence.
Through educational programmes delivered in schools, universities and public institutions, alongside conferences, round tables, exhibitions and academic partnerships, we promote historical awareness, critical thinking, human rights and genocide prevention.
By engaging young generations, we seek to preserve historical memory, strengthen democratic values and inspire active citizenship founded on respect, responsibility and peace.
Culture, Heritage and Intercultural Dialogue
Culture is a living expression of memory, identity and dialogue. We promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina through artistic, literary, linguistic and traditional initiatives that celebrate its diversity and foster intercultural understanding. By connecting remembrance with culture, we help pass this shared heritage on to future generations while building bridges between communities and strengthening social cohesion.
Advocacy and International Cooperation
We collaborate with governmental institutions, international organisations, diplomatic missions, universities, memorial centres and civil society partners to promote historical truth, international justice, peace and the universal responsibility to remember victims of genocide, crimes against humanity and mass atrocities.
Through dialogue and cooperation, we contribute to strengthening European values, defending human rights and preventing future atrocities.
Our Vision
We believe that the memory of Srebrenica belongs not only to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also to Europe and to humanity as a whole.
Remembering Srebrenica is not only about preserving the past—it is about shaping a more just, peaceful and responsible future.
By safeguarding historical truth, honouring the victims, supporting survivors and standing in solidarity with all those affected by genocide and crimes against humanity, we reaffirm our collective responsibility to uphold human dignity, human rights, democratic values and the rule of law.
Our vision is a world in which remembrance inspires responsibility, education strengthens resilience against hatred and intolerance, and future generations are empowered to defend truth, justice and peace.
The memory of Srebrenica reminds us that preventing genocide is a shared responsibility of all humanity.
Our Values
Everything we do is guided by five fundamental principles.
Truth
We uphold historical truth based on internationally established facts and judicial rulings. Preserving truth is essential to honour the victims, counter denial and ensure that history cannot be distorted or forgotten.
Human Dignity
Every human life possesses inherent dignity. We honour the memory of all victims of genocide and crimes against humanity, support survivors and promote a culture founded on empathy, respect and compassion.
Remembrance
Remembrance is both a moral responsibility and a commitment to the future. By preserving memory through education, culture and commemoration, we help ensure that the lessons of history continue to guide future generations.
Peace, Dialogue and Solidarity
We believe that lasting peace is built through dialogue, solidarity and mutual respect. By fostering intercultural and interfaith understanding, we seek to bring communities together, stand in solidarity with victims of genocide and mass atrocities, and promote democratic values, human rights and a culture of peace for future generations.
Justice and Responsibility
Justice is the foundation of reconciliation and lasting peace. We support accountability for crimes under international law, defend human rights and encourage every generation to take responsibility for protecting truth, democracy and the universal principle of “Never Again.”
